Foresight, insight and oversight: Enhancing long-term governance through better parliamentary scrutiny

Abstract

The focus of this report is on the scrutiny functions of the legislative branch of government, and more specifically on how the New Zealand House of Representatives scrutinises the quality of the nation’s long-term governance and stewardship. The purpose, in short, is to review how our Parliament currently undertakes its oversight responsibilities, explore overseas approaches from which New Zealand might learn, and consider possible improvements.
