Abstract:
This research investigated the continuing professional development (CPD) needs of reference and liaison librarians in New Zealand university libraries. CPD is a significant strategy in the improvement of organisations. The reference and liaison librarians, who have experienced the rapid developments of the digital age, are supposed to keep improving their skills and competencies for better performance. It is necessary to identify their needs in order to design appropriate and effective programmes. The results of the research revealed the following competencies should be included in future CPD programmes: information literacy, technical training (e.g., database/software training), subject or online searching, digital reference services (e.g., virtual reference service), teaching and presentation skills, ICT/IT training (e.g., use of hardware), and search strategy skills.
