Abstract:
The boutique wine industry on Waiheke Island is attracting international attention for its Bordeaux style red wine. The history of winemaking on the island goes back to the 1930s. Currently the number of vineyards has increased to around 30 and there is more than 70 hectares of land planted in vines. The wine industry on the island is economically dependent on vineyard cooperation and premium prices paid for the wine. Production is limited and in demand, especially for the established vineyards. The premium label wines from Goldwater Estate and Stonyridge vineyards sell out within days of them being offered through the vineyard's en primeur, future selling, system. These wines are of investment value and are traded profitably through wine auctions. The vineyard community plays an important part in attracting tourism and real estate interest on Waiheke. This annotated bibliography provides access to information about the Waiheke wine industry from 1978 to October 1998. It is as comprehensive as practicable within the scope specified. Media coverage includes print, television footage, Internet sites and CD-ROM material.
