Abstract:
The aim of this bibliography is to identify a selection of material representing the social and cultural aspects of New Zealand's maritime history from the coming of the Maori through to present day. It contains material on the arrival of Polynesians by canoe, the European explorers, whalers and sealers, and immigration by sea up to the mid-twentieth century. The bibliography surveys sea transportation with works on the shipping companies, harbours, and coastal and ferry transportation. Maritime and coastal lifestyles are portrayed, together with the significance of yachting in our modern day culture. A section on Auckland's local history is provided.
