Abstract:
The historical value of a building can be brought to attention through the remodeling of an existing building by reconstructing
cultural situation which the object originated. The "Patterns of Connections" design intervention will transform the buildings former
function and value through the use of a holistic tectonic intervention that transforms as it moves through the space.
The initial starting point for this project was its history and its location. St. James building serves as a transitional space between
illusion of the St James Theatre and the reality of the street (Courtenay Place). While providing active relationship with the auditorium
building it also provides distinctiveness with it. The "Patterns of Connections" design intervention is divided into three main
spaces- public spaces for the theatre patrons, semi-private studios for ballet school students and hidden activities of the staff
members and public.
The process of an orthogonal form from the street and the façade breaks down into different patterns of connections to become
a circular focal element. One continuous element placed in the building represents looking back into the memory of the
past. It will act as a gateway which divides the stillness of the observers and the dynamism of movement of the dancers within
the space. The inhabitants will be led through a sequence of pathways to experience the transition from the reality to the illusion,
as well as from the past to the future. The memory of the past will create the potential memory of the future.
