Abstract:
The Black Mill is scored for a light version of the traditional brass band: E-flat soprano cornet, 6 B-flat cornets, B-flat flugelhorn, 3 E-flat tenor horns, 2 B-flat tenor trombones, bass trombone, B-flat euphonium, E-flat bass, BB-flat bass, and 3 percussionists playing: cymbals, snare drum, xylophone, glockenspiel, wood block, 4 temple blocks, 4 tom toms, 2 suspended cymbals, 2 tenor drums (or floor toms), brake drum, tubular bells, triangle, wind chimes, "whip", tam tam, bass drum, 3 timpani.
The cast requires 3 principles: tenor, baritone, bass, a chorus of 10 male voices, and a soprano who sings from offstage at the conclusion of the fourth scene.
