Abstract
This research report examines the early years of the Architectural Centre to see the role it has played in moulding the architecture, town planning and arts of the City of Wellington.
It looks at the context that the centre was created in and the work it became involved with in its formative years - the Centres role in establishing a School of Architecture in Wellington through an education programme; the commentary on contemporary New Zealand design through the magazine New Zealand Design Review. The nurturing role played in developing modern art in Wellington through the Architectural Centre Gallery; and the way in which it was critical of the development of Wellington through its exhibitions and projects involving town planning.
It concludes with an overall view of the many faceted works of the Centre and the legacy left for the city of Wellington today.
