Abstract:
The high fidelity, stereophonic playback system has become a common part of modern living, with many people spending thousands of dollars on their equipment. In the majority of installations the full potential of the equipment is not realised because little consideration is given to the acoustic environment in which the equipment is operated.
This report presents the results of some of the extensive research that has been undertaken in the area of room acoustics, loudspeaker interaction and the physiology and psychology of hearing reproduced sound, with particular reference to domestic listening rooms. Drawn from this study are a number of recommendations which provide guidance on the acoustical design of domestic listening rooms such that the room may allow the playback equipment to deliver its full potential.
The report is aimed at the "hi-fi buff" or designer who is concerned with utilizing the of room properties to enhance the performance of a music reproduction system.
