Abstract:
This report describes a survey of all seismically isolated buildings in New Zealand. The survey is intended to investigate the dynamics within the design teams and if there are any problems with the seismically isolated schemes.
Members of the design teams were interviewed to give insight into the way teams functioned during each project. Questions asked relate to:
Seismic isolation technology
Design process
Design team functioning
Specialist consultancy
Seismic isolation industry
The purpose of the site inspections was to identify any details of the buildings that might threaten the desired performance of the seismic isolation systems. Details checked included:
Adequacy of the details of the seismic isolation system;
Possible obstructions to the correct operation of the seismic isolation system;
Possible deterioration of seismic isolation system materials.
The report recommends short term and long term maintenance of each building and provides comments that might be useful for future seismic isolation projects.
