Abstract
The first chapters of the report givesa background to steel in New Zealand and look at the manufacturing process. The report then sets out some broad conceptual ideas about the possibilities of steel forming a structural system and the parameters within which the architect must work.
The range of steel building options are explored through a series of cast studies both here and overseas, which demonstrate the many areas the architect must understand to produce a successful building.
The final chapter explores the future direction and issues facing the New Zealand commercial building market. The changes which will have the most far reaching effects being the changes is the building code proposed by the Building Industry Commission, and the new Steltech Plant opened by New Zealand Steel.
