Abstract:
Between members of an homologous series there exists a definite resemblance and gradation in chemical and in physical properties. In order to correlate these variations with change in constitution, comparative figures must be obtained for t he members of the series in regard to some physical component. A variety of physical constants have been examined in this light and the results indicate in most series, some degree of corralation between variation in constitution and the alteration in the value for the constant taken. As melting point is used as a criterion of purity for crystalline compounds, this constant is a suitable one for correlation with constitution. The results obtained when expressed as a graph are similar to those given by any physical property, with this exception, that the difference between members containing an odd number of carbon atoms and those containing an even number is not usually as marked in other physical constants.
