Abstract:
While the investigation of halogen addition to unsaturated compounds has been carried out in detail, there has been very little work done on the effects of catalysts and no attempt to establish a mechanism for the action.
The present research was concerned with the effect of certain catalysts in a non-dissociating solvent (carbon tetrachloride) on the bromination of certain unsaturated esters. The catalysts employed were:-
(1) iodine
(2) quinoline
(3) antimony tribromide.
The other main catalyst, hydrogen bromide, had been studied in some detail and will be referred to in this introduction.
