Abstract:
This research was undertaken as an extension of the Rakau studies. It was intended in part to provide material for comparison of basic Maori personality with a particular type of aberrant Maori personality. As such it was under the supervision of the late Professor Ernest Beaglehole, to whom the author owes a great debt, and valuable assistance in design and formulation of hypotheses was given by Professor J.E. Ritchie.
Professors J.R. McCreary and J.H. Robb guided me in methods of interpretation of public statistics as well as discussing the project with me. Dr. A.J.W. Taylor read and commented on the thesis in draft, Professor Hathaway commented on high F scoring obtained on the M.M.P.I., and Professor C.J. Adcock supervised the research in its final stages. To all these people I acknowledge my very real gratitude for their assistance.
