Abstract:
This project investigates Tuatua shells, searching for a seasonal pattern that would be retained within the shell. Strontium and calcium concentration profiles are measured using a proton microprobe and the shell microstructure is investigated using an electron microscope. Once a seasonal variation is established then it can be used for various purposes such as the seasonal dating and age determination of shells. If strontium is not adversely affected by diagenesis (aging effects) then fossil shells may unlock a wealth of information on ancient lunar and solar periods. They may also reveal what ancient climates were like.
