Abstract

This report arises out of an interest in urban design, and what is appropriate design in an urban context. As urban design is a very large and complex topic this report has used the book "Finding Lost Space" by Roger Trancik (1986) as a basis. Research on the topic has indicated that this book covers most of the important points in current thinking and gives a practical guide to urban design. Extra issues have been investigated where it is thought that they are relevant or haven't been developed enough in the book. The purpose of the first section is to clarify what theories and ideas are currently relevant and/or seen as important. The second section seeks to determine the relevance of these, if any, to Wellington as a whole, and the design of individual projects in the urban context of Wellington specifically.
