Abstract
this research is concerned with why housing and the private house emerged as significant architectural tasks during the modern period. Both Enlightenment ideas and Industrialisation are examined for their contribution to the loss of transcendence in architecture. Included are quantitative comparison of housing with other building types, and a pilot study survey of architectural periodicals. Those surveyed are the Architectural Record, the Architectural Review, and the NZIA Journal. The loss of transcendence in architecture is presented as a possible explanation for the emergence of housing.
