Abstract:
This research is an attempt to re-think the issues of contextualism as they relate to architecture in Dunedin City. In Dunedin, contextualism is regarded simply as building design that is in character with its surroundings. This view has provided a recent point of debate in the discourse of Dunedin contemporary architecture. Although there is a demand for contextual architecture in Dunedin City, it is a matter that appears to lack thorough understanding and potential.
This research investigates the motivations for contextualism in the city of Dunedin. In addition it identifies restrictions with respect to current ideas and refers to alternative ways for achieving contextual architecture. Finally, the research aims to establish a more comprehensive approach to contextualism that can be applied to Dunedin City.
