Abstract:
Immigration policy and the experiences of refugees from Hitler in New Zealand are the subjects of this study. New Zealand government policy before the Second World War, alien control during the war and immigration policy in the immediate post-war period have been examined from written historical documents. An account of the refugees as new settlers, as enemy aliens and as continental European New Zealanders has been assembled from tape recorded interviews with former refugees about their first ten years in New Zealand. By means of the two approaches - the investigation of policy and the conversations with refugees - it is intended to portray a more complete story of an episode in New Zealand's immigration history.
