Abstract
The industrial development of the Greater Wellington area is considerable and merits special attention in the field of planning. Within the Wellington and Lower Hutt Employment Districts, considered in this study, only 1.2% of the total industrial workers are employed in factories situated outside of the Wellington and Hutt Valley urban areas (see Fig. 1), despite the growing outward expansion of the residential community in recent years.
The study is in three sections. The first discusses the significance manufacturing is likely to have in the future, in part by analogy with past development. The second section analyses the industrial structure of the area in 1956, by type and size of factory, while the third examines the distribution of industries and the character of the various industrial regions.
