A recent publication edited by P.M. Hauser and L.F. Schnore provides a useful assessment of the direction and deficiencies of studies on urbanization to date P.M. Hauser and L.F Schnore, 1965. At the end of his introductory essay Hauser outlines the four main needs in urbanization research as seen by the Committee on Urbanization of the Social Science Research Council:
