The geology and soils of the Apiti district

Abstract

The township of Apiti is situated in the Manawatu Province some 26 miles north-north-east of the nearest railhead, Feilding. For the purposes of this thesis the Apiti district is defined as an east-west trending strip between grid references N140,530900 and N145,530790 to the east, and Oroua River and Mangiora Stream to the west, an area of approximately 70 square miles. The district includes some 45 square miles of flat to very steep farmed land between 1,200ft. and 2,700ft. high, flanked to the east by the steep to very steep forested Whanahuia and Ngamoko Ranges between 1,800ft. and 5,100ft. high. National grid references in terms of geodetic datum 1949 are quoted throughout.
