Abstract:
'The Waiting Game' is a thirteen part drama series set in the pressure cooker environment of a busy city restaurant; a world in which emotions, desires, and conflicts all become heightened by the demands for speed and satisfaction, and by the ever increasing temperature. In this environment people say what they mean, what they want, what they need. Friends and enemies are made quickly. And then there's sex. Something about the satisfying of one basic need turns people's minds inevitably towards other desires. Add to this complex mix the hierarchies and power dynamics that exist on both sides of the swinging doors and you have the recipe for a dish that never fails to surprise.
Ali Evans was not born to serve. As far as she's concerned the customer is most certainly not always right. Nevertheless, when Ali takes a job as a waitress it is a decision that has all the flavour of the inevitable about it. As is often the case in life she lands herself in the very environment that will most test her weaknesses, but also has the potential to reveal her strengths. Ali finds that while she may be 'waiting' - waiting to find out where she's going, to find love, to figure out when 'real life' is going to begin - that this is actually the time when 'real life' is really lived.
She discovers there may well be some truth in the aphorism 'good things come to those who wait.'
