The preparation of some polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Abstract

This work is an investigation of synthetic routes to some polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons through the intermediate 3',6',-dimethyl-o-terphenyl. A successful preparation of 5,8-dihydro-indeno [2,1,c] fluorene was made, but an attempted preparation of dibenzo [c,g] phenanthrene failed at the penultimate stage. A preliminary investigation into the synthesis of 3-methyl-4-phenyl-fluorene was made, with promising results.
