Abstract:
This research looks at the motivating factors which influenced eight Victoria University of Wellington Master of Library and Information Studies graduates with a library background to move into archives or records management roles after graduation. Eight interviews were conducted by the researcher in September and October 2008 using semi-structured questions to identify the main factors which influenced the decision of these eight individuals to move into archives or records management roles after graduation. Locus of control was used to analyse as to whether these factors were internally or externally motivated. Analysis is also conducted on the influence of the MLIS programme - including elective choice - on the career choice of the sample group. This research found that the eight individuals were all influenced by both internal and external factors some of which are reflective of the individuals interviewed and others on the library, archival and records management professions in New Zealand.
