Abstract:
This thesis examines the relationship between Maori and the Crown in regard to land. The theme of prejudice is used extensively to highlight the underlying reasons that hamper Maori people of Ngati Porou from the use, management and enjoyment of their land. The approach under the theme of prejudice is to analyse the structures and processes of the Crown and their effect on the people. The Treaty of Waitangi underpins the historical framework against which the entire thesis is written while selected instruments of the Crown are examined to portray clearly their impact on the people of the Ngati Porou and their land.
