This thesis sets out to explore the improvisational style of saxophonist Eddie Harris. Seven varied solos have been transcribed and analyzed with the concluding results presented herein. The transcriptions primarily focus on Harris as a Be-Bop inspired tenor player and the majority of the solos are from small group recordings. Particular emphasis has been put on Harris' use of 4th intervals and how these solos reflect the concepts set out in his teaching material. No attempt was made to emulate Harris' highly original sound, rather it was to investigate his melodic ideas and musical approaches and to see how easily these could be assimilated by the aspiring jazz improviser.en_NZ
