Abstract
What is genetically modified food (GMF) and how safe is it? What are the usual consumers concerns? Should GMF be identified, in such cases where it is found to be as safe as conventional food? Will labelling help the consumer to make an informed decision or simply confuse? All these questions will be covered in this paper.
Additionally, the paper discloses New Zealand consumers’ attitudes and New Zealand government’s views in relation to GMF’s utility, safety and labelling. Further, the paper considers New Zealand current labelling requirements and analyses whether this sufficiently protects consumers’ rights. Finally, the paper will address some proposals in relation to the possible regulatory changes
