dc.description.abstractSince Werner's original theory of coordination complexes, this section of inorganic chemis try has received the attention of many workers. The investigation of the structure of these compounds has been carried out by many methods, but recently magnetic measurements have been increasingly utilised. Pauling's theoretical interpretation of magnetic susceptibility (1) has enabled many deductions concerning structure to be made from it and so has stimulated the accumulation of magnetic evidence. Following recent work in this laboratory on the structure of nickel quinoline and isoquinoline thiocyanates (2), it was decided to attempt a systematic investigation of the magnetic susceptibilities of a series of nickel thiocyanate complexes. This was later extended to include the corresponding cobalt derivatives. The compounds were all prepared by the addition of the amine or its alcoholic solution to an aqueous solution containing thiocyanate and metal ions.en_NZ
