Abstract

This annotated bibliography is the result of a gap in the coverage of juvenile literature resources published in the period 1970 - 1997. It is designed to provide a selection of the 'best' fiction items demonstrating 'Life in New Zealand'. This is a frequently sought topic for recreational reading, and it also comprises a compulsory section of the New Zealand primary and secondary school syllabus. The bibliography exclusively comprises monographic literature. It is arranged alphabetically by author, divided chronologically by decade. Each item includes a citation and descriptive annotation. The annotation provides information on content and it specifies how the item shows 'Life in New Zealand'. It also includes information about illustration, age appropriateness, subject headings and awards received. The work includes author, title, subject and award indices. These indices are arranged alphabetically and cross referenced in order to compliment access to the bibliography. In the course of creating this bibliography I have observed trends in the content, quality and proliferation of New Zealand juvenile literature. It is safe to comment that both the quantity and quality of fiction writing has dramatically increased in the period 1970 - 1997. The subject matter has changed over the past three decades, it has moved from 'Enid Blyton' style description of family adventures to stories of social reality, including issues such as race relations and shoplifting. The New Zealand content often reflects contemporary trends and social issues, for example a current topic is the elderly, which closely corresponds with current concern for New Zealand's ageing population
