This report is concerned with the coming of age of New Zealand's population, and one of the areas in which architects can play a major part, the design and development of retirement communities. The report looks firstly at the social factors present in today's society that promote or undermine the retirement community movement. Statistical data is then referred to in support of the claims that New Zealand's elderly are increasing in numbers, and age. The particular demographic sector which finds retirement communities most appealing is also considered. Two major influences on residents imposed by the nations government are discussed, along with the micro influences individual management structures have on retirement communities. Finally, seven New Zealand architects are interviewed to ascertain their personal opinions on future developments and their design approach. With a look at the specific commissions each architect has undertaken.en_NZ
