Abstract

The chants which have developed distinctive forms in New Zealand housie, auctions and horse racing, are analysed and documented in this ethnomusicology. Other calls and chants have also been collected in extensive fieldwork in the North and South Island of New Zealand and are used as comparative examples in considering the vocal sounds between speech and song. A compact disc of recordings accompanies the thesis. Based in ethnomusicology, the thesis also draws on linguistics, and work in other disciplines, to contribute to a study of chant and community.
