Abstract
As the nature of work within New Zealand and overseas changes, the numbers of unemployed have increased. The way in which New Zealand governments have endeavoured to provide for this change is examined with particular reference to the policies underlying this provision.
The role of leisure and the way it is perceived presently in society is discussed. Attention then focuses on the contribution leisure has to offer to the quality of life of the unemployed and its role in government-funded work schemes.
