Abstract
1. A critical account is given of the evidence for the existence of dichlorocarbene, of its methods of preparation and of its reactions and structure.
2. Experimental work, performed with the object of isolating or removing dichlorocarbene from reaction mixtures in which it is formed, is described. Suggestions as to why this work was unsuccessful are given. A product of reaction between dichlorocarbene and an ether has been isolated and is described.
3. Suggestions are made concerning further work, including the possibility of preparing a new series of co-ordination compounds.
