On the 12th of January, 1941, an event occurred in London from which can be traced the growth of the international organization today known as the United Nations. On this day the St. James Declaration was signed by the representatives of the nations of the British Commonwealth, by the representatives of the exiled governments of nine Axis-occupied countries, and by General De Gaulle for the Free French movement. That this Declaration was one of the utmost importance for the future international organization of the world for peace as well as for the necessary alliance to promote the immediate victory against the Fascist powers can be seen from reference to its Third Point,en_NZ
