This thesis gives an account of halogen addition to some simple olefinic compounds. The halogens used were iodine and bromine; the compounds studied were ethylene, propylene, 1-decene and allyl bromide; and the solvent used in all the experiments was chloroform. The reactions were carried out mostly in the dark, although some qualitative work on photo-iodination was done. Iodination of a fifth substance, originally thought to be 1-octene, showed it must have been an isomer. The prime object of these researches was to discover the effect on the rate of halogen addition to the ethylene link of an attached alkyl group, and that of an attached brom-alkyl group.en_NZ
