This report is about the atrium which is today understood to be a covered, daylit courtyard space, that exists within a building or between several buildings, and usually extends several levels. It is an ancient architectural device that has attained new popularity in many parts of the world. This report focuses on identifying the architectural opportunities and potential of an atrium, due to its inherent qualities and enhanced by other additive elements. Its qualities include its spatial nature, its circulatory role, its function as a shared space as well as its provision for shelter and light. The other elements include colour, finishing, planting and activities within the space. There are however certain barriers and restrictions that limit or prevent the use of an atrium in a building such as economics or fire safety. Nonetheless, the atrium makes a significant contribution to creating architectural spaces that are exciting and fun. It is in essence a place for people; with the technical performance, aesthetic qualities, functional usage and socioeconomic interest, centred on the needs of people. In the New Zealand context, the atrium is a relatively new form that has yet to gain popularity. As it was in other parts of the world, there are hindrances to the atrium's use and development. In spite of this, the atrium can offer attractive architectural possibilities that allow a reorientation towards people. Given time, the atrium is likely to establish a place for space, the atrium, here in New Zealand.en_NZ
