Abstract

The purpose of this thesis was to screen a number of local molluscs, mainly of marine origin, to find a cheap local source of the enzymes aryl sulphatase, phosphatase, β-glucosidase, and if possible, β-glucuronidase. These enzymes were required in a soluble form for hydrolysing conjugates formed in the course of detoxication research in this Laboratory. If possible, the source had to be something that was fairly readily available throughout the year, and it would be helpful if it could be obtained commercially provided the cost was not prohibitive.
