Abstract
The Woodville area is situated in the southern part of the North Island, on the eastern side of the Tararua-Rushine Range (see Fig 1). It is about 100 miles north of Wellington, and 19 miles northeast of Palmerston North (see Fig 2). The area is situated between longitudes 175°46' 03" and 175° 59' 01" east, and latitudes 40° 14' 04" and 40° 24' 26" south, and occupies almost the whole area of the Woodville Survey District of Lille (1953). The northern boundary of the area extends from the Pohangina River to Wharite hill then crosses the Ruahine Range to the northern part of Maharahara West. On the east the area extends south from Maharahara West to Hopeland and Makairo. On the south the area extends from Makairo to Ballance. The western boundary follows the Pohangina River to the south and crosses the Tararua Range to Ballance. The total area is 10 x 10.5 square miles (105 square miles).
