Abstract
The theoretical properties of silicon surface barrier nuclear particle detectors and their method of construction are described. Testing of the counters by the detection of alpha particles and by other means is reported and a description of their application to the detection of 900 kev. He 3 particles from the D(d,n)He3 reaction and the special precautions which must be taken to prevent damage from scattered deuterons is given. The nature of this damage is discussed. A brief description is given of some further applications of the detectors.
