Part One: Folio of Compositions

Abstract

The folio consists of five pieces which are linked by common technical concerns. Two acousmatic pieces, Cat, Dog Pie, and Ex machine, elaborate musical structures around concrete sound recordings. In the remaining pieces, instrumental sound materials are treated in an analogous fashion, with the emphasis on the intrinsic qualities of the sounds. In Sinew/synapse, for solo cello, the materials are roughly congruent with various performance techniques; Written on the Wind, and Running Water for string quartet, extends the treatment to more complex composite sound objects; and Sparks Among the Geysers, for ensemble, expands this further, to a greater diversity of sources.
