Abstract

Consultation with indigenous peoples has become an increasingly important feature of government policy development and decision making, and the need to review and evaluate consultation processes is acknowledged internationally. Consultation processes involve the production of numerous documents of varying types, both published and unpublished. Although bibliographic coverage of consultation documentation would provide a useful resource for reviewing these processes, use of this tool appears to be scant or non-existent. In New Zealand, documents related to government consultation with Maori are deposited in a variety of locations and access is fragmented and time-consuming. This selective, annotated bibliography aims to remedy this gap by providing coherent, bibliographic access to documents relating to New Zealand Government consultation with Maori for the period 1980 - 2000. Documents recorded relate to consultations in the area of Maori social development, with emphasis on the key areas of health, education, te reo Maori and broadcasting. The bibliography contains one hundred and seventy eight entries, arranged numerically. Entries are cross-referenced to other related documents recorded in the bibliography. Access to entries is provided by author/publisher, date, title and subject indexes. The primary format of the bibliography is paper-based, supported by bibliographic computer software to facilitate updating, expansion and advanced information retrieval.
