This study traces developments of Outward Bound in New Zealand from 1960 to 1979. It is introduced with a background to Outward Bound in the United Kingdom and its origins as an established institution. It then traces the history of the movement in the years 1960-62 which covers the setting up of the School of Anakiwa. The philosophy of the Outward Bound is discussed in the broad sense of the Outward Bound movement and its importance as a base for the New Zealand school. Changes are described which have occurred in the period, as well as changes which have occurred to the type of course offered. Outward Bound is then examined in the wider context of other organisations using the outdoors as an environment for teaching, focusing particularly on two other New Zealand outdoor centres. Finally, the option open to the movement in New Zealand is discussed, and some positive recommendations have been made for the future.en_NZ
