Abstract
This report aims to provide architects and other people interested in the built environment with a degree of awareness and understanding of the use, or potential use, of metaphor in architectural expression. In doing so it will introduce, and hopefully consolidate, the small body of existing work on the subject; while offering a more easily read alternative to works of semiotic theory.
To achieve this, the report discusses firstly a theoretical background to the subject; then a number of historical and contemporary applications, the latter comprising both projects and finished buildings wholly from within the Wellington region.
