Musics of the Ethnic Minorities of China: an Annotated Bibliography of Articles Published in Chinese Periodicals

Abstract

This bibliographic survey covers articles on the musics of the ethnic minorities of China published in three major Chinese music periodicals: Zhongguo Yinyue (China Musicl. Zhongguo Yinyuexue (Musicology in China) and Yueqi (Musical . Instruments) over the decade 1981-1991. The articles are listed in three different indices: Minority Index. Subject Index. and Author Index. TWo perspectives of the ethnomusicological work in the bibliography are presented in the Commentary section. Firstly an article by Yuan Bingchang. "A Retrospective and Prospective Look at the Work of Researching the Musics of the Ethnic Minorities" (Musicology in China Vol 11. April 1988. p921. is translated in full and discussed. And secondly. some issues that have currency in Western ethnomusicology are discussed in relation to the material covered.
