Abstract

This guide to archives and manuscripts on Maori women held in the Alexander Turnbull Library covers information relating to Maori women. This guide is designed to assist in making information more accessible to people wishing to study aspects concerning the lives of Maori women in the 19th century. It provides another access point to supplement the larger bibliographies, with a focus on Maori women that highlights material written by Maori women. The guide aimed to provide comprehensive coverage of all archives and manuscripts that have been catalogued in the Archives and Manuscripts section of the Alexander Turnbull Library, that were created by or relate to Maori women. The archives and manuscripts covered are diaries, correspondence, reminiscences, minutebooks, etc, of individual women and organisations that Maori women were involved in. The main search strategy was to search using the names of individual women, located from other sources, including "My hand will write what my heart dictates", "The book of New Zealand women" and "Women's words". By using these keywords and searching the names index, many of the references in the guide were located. This along with keywords such as 'women' and 'Maori' were the chief access points to the records relating to Maori women.
