Abstract

The morphology of adult and larval Squilla armata Milne-Edwards is described. The taxonomic position and life history of the species is elucidated. S.armata from New Zealand, South Africa, and South America are considered identical. 11 larval stages are recognised: 2 pre-pelagic and 9 pelagic. Larvae differ markedly from adults. A larval calendar is presented: larvae are most abundant in Wellington Harbour during September. Aspects of larval behaviour are noted. Burrowing and breeding behaviour of the adults is described.
