Abstract

In 1945 the first student Although students from Asia and elsewhere came to study in New Zealand before the War, nevertheless these were private students. Professor L.V. Castle Personal Communication from Western Samoa arrived in New Zealand to study under a New Zealand Government scholarship. At that time nobody realised that this was going to be the beginning of the great influxes of students from the world's then emerging nations. These came first under multilateral auspices, including the United Nations Technical Assistance Programme, W.H.O., UNESCO, and the New Zealand Government UNESCO Fellowships and Bursaries Scheme.
