The Anatomy and Life History of Landsburgia Quercifolia

Abstract

The brown alga, Landsburgia quercifolia, was unknown to Turner and was first described by Hooker and Harvey in the London Journal of Botany Vol. 4, 1845. They described it under the name of Phyllospora querci-folia, and considered it to be the same plant as Fucus quercifolius which had been described by Turner. Hooker corrected this error in his "Flora Novae-Zelandiae" Vol. 2, 1855, and used the name Lands- burgia quercifolia, the generic name being bestowed in honour of the Rev. Dr, Landsborough, author of "Popular British Seaweeds". hooker wrote that Dr. Harvey had long regarded the alga as the type of a new genus, allied to phyllospora from which it differs in the absence of vesicles, the more perfect foliation, etc., and to scytothalia from which the different evolution of the fruit distinguishes it.
