Abstract

Unlike her sister Dominions, New Zealand before 1935 showed little or no interest in international affairs and a foreign policy as something independent of Great Britain's was practically non-existent. But with the spread of aggression in both Europe and Asia, New Zealand was compelled to look beyond her own shores and take notice of forces, which, some people saw, could threaten even the security of so isolated and remote a country as New Zealand.
