Abstract

This thesis deals with the geology of an area of some sixty square miles at the extreme east of the Bay of Plenty in the North Island. A coastline twenty miles long extends from the settlement of Te Kaha to beyond Cape Runaway headland. The area mapped comprises the Survey Districts of Te Kaha (N/61) and the greater portion of Whangaparaoa (N/62). Map I shows the salient topographical features and location of the area and its immediate surroundings. Of the Raukokore area, forty square miles have been mapped in detail and approximately twenty square miles by reconnaissance. The latter area includes the Tertiary and Upper Cretaceous rocks above the Mohau-Whangaparaoa River junction, the Raukokore - Waikura River junction, and the Lower Cretaceous rocks between the Kereu River and Waikawa Point.
